Why Human Rights? 1 was made with Amnesty International to help school students in Western World democracies gain a better understanding of human rights, and how they are routinely abused around the world. Sometimes in unexpected places.
The DVD uses clips from acclaimed films and TV documentaries - many filmed more than ten years ago. There are sequences on religious prepression, police brutality, torture, the death penalty and genocide. Although the issues and human stories portrayed are often tragic and sad, the aim of the DVD and CD based activities, is to show that human rights can be advanced and protected.
This DVD includes reported film from: Argentina, Chile, Iraq, the USSR (before the walls came down), the Philippines, South Africa (in time of Apartheid), Israeli Occupied Territories (little has changed over 20 years), the USA, and Northern Ireland (in the time of the IRA).
This is a classic video kit. Thousands are in use around the world. Now it is available in this DVD version - with pin-sharp digital video, and quick keypad access to DVD sequences.
Available on free approval.

Why Human Rights II ? is a DVD Kit designed for the classroom with factual advice from Amnesty International. The video case studies are often tragic, but convey the commitment and principles of individuals, as they push for change in their countries. Often against huge odds. The case studies are from the 1990's but retain the same freshness and relevance today - sadly, some things are slow to change in a troubled world. The activities encourage students to examine their own priorities, and to critically explore how countries manage those who are dissenters. At times of international controversy this DVD is an invaluable way of encouraging students to recognise the values of those seeking change, and the methods of control used by those in power.
There are video case study reports from: Tibet, ex-Yugoslavia, Nigeria, Turkey, Iraq, Indonesia, East Timor, Uruguay, Sudan, Pakistan, USA, China, Chile, Morocco, Somalia, Russia, Argentina, Brazil and Britain.
The human case studies reported explore: street children, genocide, freedom of expression, rights, refugees, disappearances, prisoners of conscience, and torture. By way of example, DVD clip 2 (6mins - freedom of expression) reports:
  • Civil rights activist imprisoned during 'Right to Vote' campaign in USA.
  • Nun imprisoned and tortured for supporting Dalai Lama and Tibetan independence.
  • Indonesian factory worker tortured and killed for trade union activity.
  • Execution of writer (Ken Saro-Wiwa) in Nigeria who campaigned against environmental damage.
CD based briefings and activity sheets help with the preparation of classroom lessons. Available on free approval.
