The Algebra Tutor Tests and teacher feedback demonstrate that the The Algebra Tutor fits well with math curriculum requirements in New Zealand and Australia. The two DVDs in this set contain six hours tutoring, divided into useful chapters, and interspersed with many painstakingly worked examples. Each step is carefully and deliberately explained by Jason, so no one gets lost. Like all of Jason's resources, this a very useful classroom supplement. It is not a substitute for a good teacher, rather it is an assistant tutor. It can help teachers improve their own teaching - Jason is good example. Or the teacher can use it in class. You can stop and start the DVD as Jason works through examples, checking student understanding yourself and enlarging on points, before proceeeding with the DVD. Disc 1 includes: graphing equations; the slope of a line; writing equations of lines; graphing inequalities; solving equations by graphing; solving equations by substitution; solving systems of equations by addition. Throughout this DVD, Jason patiently and explains the tricks of the trade in working with equations. His enthusiasm is helpful! Disc 2 builds on DVD1 and includes: solving systems of equations with three variables; simplifying radical expressions; add/subtract radical expressions; multiply/divide radical expressions; solving equations with radicals; fractional exponents; solving polynomial equations; the quadratic formula. Jason's plain-speaking approach works well. Just the basic steps carried out well on the white board, lucidly explained. By following his example, and his examples, students and teachers alike benefit from this well designed teaching resource. | ||

The Trigonometry & Pre-Calculus Tutor The Trig and Pre-Calculus Tutor covers essential material necessary for most calculus curriculum requirements in New Zealand and Australia, using the same language and formalism. This five hour classroom supplement is not a substitute for a good teacher, rather it is an assistant: it can assist the teacher to be a more effective maths teacher using Jason's approach and ideas; or the teacher can use the DVD in the classoom - stopping and starting the DVD as Jason works through examples, you can check student understanding yourself, before proceeeding with the DVD. Disc 1 includes: complex numbers; exponential functions; logarithmic functions; solving logarithmic and exponential functions; angles. As any math teacher can verify - exponents and logs seem very mysterious to most students. Jason's approach is exemplary. Students understand the concepts better after viewing this DVD. Disc 2 includes: finding trig functions using triangles; finding trig functions using the unit circle; graphing trig functions; trig identies and equations. The Calculus Tutor The Calculus Tutor covers essential material necessary for calculus curriculum requirements in Australia and New Zealand. As Jason himself notes, "how does a baby learn to speak? The DVDs contains hundreds of examples with each step carefully and deliberately explained by Jason, so no one gets lost. This is a very useful classroom supplement. It is not a substitute for a good teacher, rather it is an assistant tutor. The teacher can stop and start the DVD as Jason works through examples, checking student understanding, before proceeeding. Disc 1 includes: what is differentiation (what is a derivative)? the derivative defined as a limit; differentiation equations; derivatives of trigonometric functions; the chain rule; higher order derivatives; related rates; curve sketching using derivatives. Disc 2 includes: introduction to integrals; solving integrals; integration by substitution; calculating volume with integrals; derivatives and integrals of exponentials; derivatives of logarithms; integration by parts; integration by trig substitution; improper integrals. We have trialled these DVDs with our daughters, and tested them with teachers. They work. Jason's plain-speaking approach is appreciated. No jokes, no fancy graphics, just the basic steps carried out well on the white board, and lucidly explained.
